Grindelwald on a Rainy Day: Indoor Ideas, Nearby Trips and What to Postpone

Ramon Stüdeli
By , who lives in Grindelwald and Lucerne

Quick answer: When it rains in Grindelwald, head to the Sports Centre (indoor pool, ice skating, bouldering room, sauna) or, in summer, the Grindelwald Museum. Nearby, the St. Beatus Caves (open year-round, except for maintenance Nov 9–20, 2026) and, from April to early November, the Trümmelbach Falls inside the mountain are worth the trip. Check the webcams first: rain in the valley doesn't mean there's no view up top.

Key facts at a glance

First: check the webcams

Before you cancel a mountain day, look at the webcams. grindelwald.swiss shows Grindelwald-First, Männlichen, Bussalp, Faulhorn, Eigergletscher station and the Jungfraujoch, among others. jungfrau.ch also has webcams for the Jungfraujoch, Eigergletscher, Schreckfeld and Männlichen. If the summit is in the clouds, push pricey trips like the Jungfraujoch to a clear day if your ticket allows it.

FAQ

What can you do in Grindelwald when it rains?

Go swimming, ice skating, bouldering or to the sauna at the Sports Centre, or visit the Grindelwald Museum in summer. Outside the village, the St. Beatus Caves and the Trümmelbach Falls are worth it.

Is the Jungfraujoch worth it in the rain?

Only if the webcam shows a view at the top. Rain in the valley says little about the weather at 11,332 ft (3,454 m). If the summit is in the clouds, it's better to postpone.

Is the Grindelwald indoor pool open?

Monday to Saturday 10 am–8 pm, Sunday 10 am–6 pm. It's closed for maintenance from Nov 2 to Nov 22, 2026.

How much is the Grindelwald indoor pool?

Adults CHF 10, kids 6–15 CHF 8. Half price with the guest card (as of October 2026).

Are the Trümmelbach Falls open when it rains?

Yes, they're inside the mountain and reached by a tunnel lift. They're open from early April to early November, and kids under 4 aren't allowed.

How can I tell if it's nice up top?

Check the webcams on grindelwald.swiss and jungfrau.ch, for example First, Männlichen and the Jungfraujoch.

What can I do with kids on a rainy day?

The indoor pool with its slide and paddling pool, ice skating or the St. Beatus Caves. The indoor playground at the Sports Centre is closed until spring 2027.
